Description: Hear, O Israel, is an easily remembered melody with eighth note accompaniment. Opening in d minor, this anthem begins with a recitativ-like (optional) solo, “Hear, O Israel, and America, and Afghanistan and Russia and Italy: the Lord Our God is One!”).
Teaching Guide
- Teach the choristers to sing the intervals in bars 12-19.
- Teach the choristers to chant the words in rhythm; teach meter changes.
- Teach the choristers to sing the melody on the syllable “loo” (without piano).
- Teach each phrase with text and melody together, emphasizing breath support.
- If a group of choristers is singing the solo part together, work on making this section sound like a recitativ, rather than sounding metered.
