This very old legend has its roots in medieval France, although almost every European country has a version of its own. In 1902, the legend was given an operatic treatment by Jules Massenet in Le Jongleur de Notre Dame (The Juggler of Notre Dame). This re-telling is set in 12th century England (thus taking advantage of the English tunes) and should be costumed appropriately.
