Description

SATB. One of Mr. Billings' (1746-1800) relatively unknown masterpieces. Just 17 measures (but with two verses printed here.) Could be an introit or a lovely little short Easter Anthem. Great for Easter Vigil, Easter Morning (who does a Sunrise Service?), or anytime during the Easter season. A sturdy, rustic setting - quintessential Early American.

Arise, and hail the sacred day;
cast all low cares of life away,
and thoughts of meaner things;
this day, to cure thy deadly woes,
the Sun of Righteousness arose
with healing in his wings.

O then let heav'n and earth rejoice,
creation's whole united voice,
and hymn the sacred day,
when sin and Satan vanquish'd fell,
and all the pow'rs of death and hell,
before his sov'reign sway.
