Description

Two-part (mixed) choir and organ. Text by John Byrom. Plaintive, mournful, and beautiful, this piece exudes a certain Romantic ethos reminiscent of Franck, Saint-Saëns, or Fauré. Your choir will love it.  Text by John Byrom (d.1763).

Notes: This expressive two-part anthem needs to be sung in a relaxed manner with the syncopated dotted quarter-eighth figure not sounding too angular. The men’s part is high and basses should be careful not to force out the top notes. Sopranos and altos should practice the last phrase – to tune the last two notes accurately.

My Spirit longs for thee
Within my troubled breast
Though I unworthy be
Of so divine a guest.

Of so divine a guest
Unworthy though I be
Yet has my heart no rest
Unless it come from thee.

Unless it come from thee
In vain I look around
In all that I can see
No rest is to be found.

No rest is to be found
But in thy blessed love
O let my wish be crowned
And send it from above.
