Two-part choir and piano or organ. An arrangement of the classic canon by William Billings, with additional text from a hymn by Charles William Everest.
When Jesus wept, the falling tear
In mercy flowed beyond all bound.
When Jesus groaned, a trembling fear
Seized all the guilty world around.
"Take up your cross," the Saviour said,
"If you would my disciple be;
Take up your cross with willing heart,
And humbly follow after me."
Take up your cross, then, in his strength,
And calmly sin's wild deluge brave;
Twill guide you to a better home,
It points to glory o'er the grave.
