Composer Orlando Gibbons

Orlando Gibbons - Small Photo
1583 - 1625

An English composer, virginalist, and organist of the late Tudor and early Jacobean periods. Gibbons was a younger contemporary of William Byrd, although his musical style tended to be more forward-looking than Byrd's. He composed highly original works for keyboard and viol consort as well as a large number of madrigals and church anthems, including many in the emerging Verse Anthem style.  He died of apoplexy at the age of 41 and was buried at Canterbury.  (Read more - Wikipedia article.)
