Description

An English composer, virginalist, and organist of the late Tudor and early Jacobean periods. Gibbons was a younger contemporary of William Byrd, although his musical style tended to be more forward-looking than Byrd's. He composed highly original works for keyboard and viol consort as well as a large number of madrigals and church anthems, including many in the emerging Verse Anthem style. He died of apoplexy at the age of 41 and was buried at Canterbury.
