Joshua Fit de Battle
SATB Choir and Piano (Organ). As with a lot of the "Spiritual" scriptural references, this story is (alas!) excluded from the modern lectionary. Don't let that stop you though. As a general anthem during the summer, we say, "Why not?" And then, of course, there are those preachers who wander from the lectionary and suddenly you'll find yourself in Joshua, Chapters 5 and 6. Wherever you find to use it, this one is a winner. Fun!
Joshua fit de battle of Jericho
an de walls come a-tumblin' down.
You may talk about your men of Gideon,
You may talk about your men of Saul;
Dere's none like good ol' Joshua
an de battle of Jericho.
Up to the walls of Jericho,
He marched with spear in hand;
"Go blow dem ram's horns," Joshua cried,
"for de battle am in my hand."
